Our spelling lessons this term are being guided by students’ SWST results, along with common spelling misconceptions we’ve noticed in the classroom. This helps us target the skills our students need most. Each week, students take part in a spelling inquiry where they explore things like word origins, spelling patterns, letter-sound relationships and the rules that help us spell words correctly. Rather than simply memorising a list of words, students are developing a deeper understanding of how spelling works.
After our whole-class inquiry lesson, students work in small spelling clinics throughout the week based on the focus words and skills. These targeted groups provide extra support and practice, helping students build confidence and become more accurate, independent spellers.
