Author's Study - Jackie French

In Term 3, our Jackie French reading unit has taken us on an incredible journey through Fire, Flood, Pandemic, Cyclone and Earthquake. Each week, students explored a new text and delved deeply into Jackie French’s unique author’s craft. We discovered how she brings natural disasters to life by making them characters, using powerful personification, similes, and vivid imagery.
Students also noticed an important message throughout the stories, the power of communities coming together to support one another, recover and rebuild. Through activities focusing on vocabulary, imagery, inferencing and comprehension, students developed a deeper understanding of each text. This exciting unit not only introduced students to a wonderful author and her unique writing style but also helped build important skills that are now carrying over into our writing unit!

What a fantastic unit for the Grade 3/4 students, exploring Jackie French's work on natural disasters and the power of descriptive language.
