Australian Money - Maths

In Grade 1 Maths, we have been enjoying plenty of hands-on learning as we explored Australian money. Students loved sorting, counting and using coins to build their confidence in recognising different denominations and understanding their value. To celebrate the end of our unit, our classroom was transformed into a pretend ice cream shop! Students chose their favourite ice cream flavours and toppings, worked out which Australian coins they needed to pay, and practised writing the correct money amounts. It was a fun and engaging way to apply their learning in a real-world context while strengthening their confidence with money.

Alongside this, we have been developing our problem-solving skills by focusing on the learning process rather than simply finding the correct answer. Students are embracing challenges, exploring different strategies, sharing their thinking, and persevering when tasks become tricky. Through this, they are strengthening their mathematical thinking, building resilience, and developing the confidence to keep trying, learn from mistakes, and grow as capable mathematicians.
